As a specialty store founded specifically for men’s kimono and yukata, Fujikiya proudly offers one of the most extensive selections of men’s yukata in Tokyo—and arguably in all of Japan. We provide a wide variety of designs and sizes, ranging from SS to 5L (eight sizes in total), making our yukata suitable for a broad range of body types, including not only Japanese customers but also international visitors.
Fujikiya is known as a welcoming entry point for beginners interested in kimono. Many first-time visitors come to us with questions about sizing, which is why we’d like to share some tips on **“How to Choose the Right Size Men’s Yukata Without Regret.”**
◆ How to Choose a Men’s Yukata
When selecting a yukata, it’s important not to rely solely on your western clothing size. Doing so may result in choosing the wrong fit.
In western fashion, the “fit” is often prioritized—so even someone around 180cm tall may choose a size M if they have a slim build. However, just because you wear an M in western clothes doesn’t mean an M-sized yukata will fit properly.
◆ The Key to Sizing: “Length (Kitake)”
The most critical factor when choosing a yukata is **the garment length**, known as *kitake*.
While the width can often be adjusted during the dressing process, this is not the case with length—especially for men. Unlike women’s yukata, men’s yukata do not use the “ohashori” (a fold to adjust length), so no matter how skilled your dressing technique, you cannot make a short yukata look longer.
In short, **length is the most important measurement when choosing a men’s yukata**.
◆ “Height minus 25–30cm” is *not always* the right rule
So, what is the right length? While some say the ideal yukata length is your height minus 25–30cm, this isn’t always accurate. Depending on your body type, **height minus 20cm** may be more suitable. Additionally, the ideal length can vary depending on the occasion or purpose for wearing the yukata. In fact, the preferred length for a yukata may differ from that of a traditional kimono.
Therefore, **you shouldn’t assume that “height minus 25–30cm” is always correct** when it comes to yukata.
◆ We Strongly Recommend Trying Yukata On In-Store!
So how should you choose the right size? The best way is simple: **try it on in-store**. Even if two yukata are labeled the same size, the actual measurements can vary by manufacturer. Furthermore, variations in the front width, back width, and overlap width can affect how the garment hangs on your body.
At Fujikiya, we encourage all customers to try on yukata to ensure they look their best. Summer festivals and fireworks displays are happening across Japan this year—so find the perfect yukata and enjoy the season in style! ^ ^
